Learn About Metallica's James Hetfield

By Andrew D. Ward

James Hetfield, middle name Alan, is a German, English, Scottish and Irish musician from Downey, California. Born on the 3rd of August, 1963. He has two half-brothers and a younger sister. His mom was named Cynthia and his dad was Virgil. Virgil left the family when this now famous rock star was little.

James became dependent on music at sixteen, when his mother died of cancer. He began to play with a lot of amateur bands. But he was always interested in music, having learned piano at the age of nine and guitar at the age of fourteen. He also learned to play the drums.

In the seventies, he briefly played with the bands Leather Charm and Obsession, while working in a sticker printing industrial unit on the side. After responding to a classified ad in the paper, he met drummer Lars Ulrich. Together, they formed Metallica. At present, the band's lead guitarist and bassist are Kirk Hammett and Robert Trujillo respectively. When they started out, they had Ron McGovney as their bassist and Dave Mustaine as their lead guitarist.

In Hit Parade's list of "100 Greatest Metal Vocalists of All Time", he was ordered 24th. In Joel McIver's "The 100 Greatest Metal Guitarists" he was named 8th. With singles that reached the chart tops and albums that went multi-platinum, Metallica redefined heavy metal. In 2009, the band was inducted into the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame.

The band also won nine Grammys with him as their main songwriter. He wrote the band's ever-so popular "Nothing Else Matters" from their 5th album, "Metallica". The album was #1 on the Billboard 200 at its debut, selling over 600,000 copies. It is the 26th best-selling album in the US. "Nothing Else Matters" placed 34th on the Billboard Hot 100 and 11th on the US Billboard Mainstream Rock Tracks.

He married Francesca Tomasi on August 17, 1997. They have three children; Cali, Castor and Marcella. Even after settling down, James Hetfield is currently going strong.
