Everyone has their own idea on how to set goals for their personal success but they are not always the most effective. Some people are holding back their progress by not ensuring all the elements of a great goal are present when planning their goals. It takes more than just grabbing some paper and writing down some ideas. That is just the beginning. In order to live the life of your dreams you need to ensure they have these six components.

Why are some people motivated and driven to achieve their goals while others are left feeling confused as to why nothing ever works out for them? The difference is in the source of their motivation. Successful people set goals from a place of intrinsic motivation which is the type of motivation that comes from your internal desires. Unsuccessful people allow their external influences to set their goals for them. The easiest way to tell where your motivation is coming from is by how fulfilling the goal feels while you are on your journey to completing it.

Vague goals end up leading you to absolute confusion and zero results. Goals that are worded in a way that don't actually indicate what the end result is you are seeking do not allow you to plan success properly. Being specific means not only planning each step that is going to help you achieve that goal but also in the wording of the goal itself. A goal of being healthy is not specific enough. You have to breakdown what being healthy means to you. If being healthy means you can run 10 km in one hour then that is the goal you would set.

A goal that is measurable means you have identified the end result you want to create. It could either be the exact amount of money or the number of pounds you want to lose, etc. You will also be able to gauge where you are in your progress. If you want to save $5000 in a year and you are at month six with $2500 you are right on track. If you have eight dollars saved you know you haven't been putting in the work needed or chose an unrealistic goal.

We all have dreams and desires but we tend to stand in our own way of achieving them. We do this by not being honest with ourselves on whether or not we have the skills, talents and strengths needed to attain our goals. If you believe the person you are right now will get you everything you want in life I will be honest and say it most likely won't happen. There will need to be some personal growth that takes place in order to take you from where you are to where you want to go otherwise you would already be there.

Limitless thinking or thinking big is what a lot of successful people will say they used to achieve their goals. What they fail to mention is that they were also experts at setting realistic goals. They set goals that aligned with their core values at the time and felt great while they pursued those goals. Realistically you will not succeed at your goal if you are always sacrificing that which matters the most to you to get it. Even if you do achieve the goal it will leave you feeling empty inside or as some have discovered rich and lonely.

You are setting yourself up for underachievement if you do not put the pressure on to accomplish goals in a timely fashion. The flip side though is you set yourself up to fail by setting goals within an unrealistic time frame. This is a balancing act and is crucial in the planning of your goals. Research every facet of your goal to know exactly what it will take to reach it and also how long each step of the way will take. Then commit yourself to a time frame that scares you a little and makes you know that there will need to be daily action taken to achieve it.

There is no cookie cutter way of learning how to set goals but through trial and error you will discover the right way for you. In the beginning this may seem like a lot of work but the reward of your commitment and perseverance is having your dream life. Goal setting will always lead you down the path of success. It is just up to you to take the first step down it.

There are many times when talking with another person about a stressful situation is the most effective route to relaxation. Reading a book won't let you have a dialog the way therapists do.

Like all of us, she is wired to avoid pain first, so even though she wanted to lose weight to experience all the pleasurable benefits she had given me, skipping the exercise because of the pain she linked with it was the greater motivator. I asked her to tell me what would happen if she didn't exercise. "I'll stay fat." she said. "What will that mean?" I asked. She said she would continue to feel unattractive, her clothes would cut into her skin because they were too tight, people would snicker behind her back whenever she was out to eat and she would possibly get diabetes. I wanted her to stop procrastinating so I asked whether she would rather experience the pain linked to the exercise or the pain linked to staying fat. There was no hesitation. The pain linked to staying fat would be far worse and more permanent.

She agreed that whenever she felt tempted to skip exercise from then on she would immediately interrupt that pattern and focus her thoughts on how it would feel to stay fat versus how she would feel doing exercise. I knew if she could do this that it would cancel out the debilitating pain she linked with exercise and she would STOP PROCRASTINATING. Last I heard she was still exercising every day. If you follow the above process you too will be able to determine the right action to take to interrupt your own procrastination habit. Review your results and act.Once you have spent some time approaching your situation differently you must notice whether you are getting different results. Are you procrastinating less, maybe completely? If so you will have found a way that works to help you too and you will know what to continue doing.
