Setting Goals With Basic Values

By Quinn Harris

Setting goals is a skill that everyone who wishes to be successful should learn and master. Sadly, many people set up the wrong goals with the result that they will either abandon the goals because they aren't achieving them, or because they just can't get motivated enough.

Because of this reason, your goals should flow right along your values.

What Are Your Basic Values

Your basic values include all the things you believe in which you feel passionate about and that you consider important. They represent you and all you stand fo. For example, if you stand for honesty and fairness, then you should ensure that your goals reflect those preferences. Such as making money, in a way that is fair and honest, without cheating or harming people.

It is essential to consider your values, since lack of doing so will inevitably lead to feeling guilty about doing something you shouldn't, and you will, in time, lose all motivation.

In other words, if you are an honest person who likes to act with fairness, and you try to make money doing something you consider dishonest, you will feel bad and you will lose your impetus to apply yourself and become successful. To become successful, you must do something you enjoy, and that's why it is so important to choose something that is in alignment with who you are.

Another important consideration to make when setting goals is whether or not they challenge you. If the goals you are setting do not "stretch you" and pull you outside your comfort zone, then you are unlikely to feel motivated and driven to achieve them. Do keep in mind, however, that goals should not be too challenging either, or else you will give up on them, on the basis that they are unachievable.

Of course, this doesn't mean that you can't set your bar of expectations a bit higher than you can presently reach. Different people may see the same goal as either possible or impossible, depending on their individual perceptions. So the goals you set should be based on what you realistically believe you can achieve. This point brings to mind another consideration, since some people do things for the sake of others and not for themselves. Just to give you an example, many used to believe that flying was impossible and that no human could ever do it.

Hower, that wasn't what the Wright brothers thought, and their belief led them to invent the first real plane. If the Wright brothers bought into the opinions of others, we might not be flying on planes today.

So when setting yourself goals make sure they are the things that you really want to do in life, and are aligned with what you believe in and believe you can achieve. If you can do this you will set goals that are right for you, and vastly increase the chances you will accomplish them.
