Studying Tips: 5 Steps To Goal Setting Success

By Lachlan Haynes

Life without order can be chaotic, and the best way to create order is to set goals. Goal setting can be the key to having success and happiness in your life. Everyone already knows how to set a goal, most people do it every year with News Years Resolutions, however it is sticking to and achieving the goal that can become difficult. In order to attain the goals you set you must know exactly what you want out of it, be passionate about it, and have a solid plan of action. While you may find yourself facing many obstacles along the path to your goal, you can use these 5 tried and true methods to help you achieve the success you want and deserve.

1. Know exactly what your goal is. Your first job is to discover exactly what your goal is. What will achieving that goal really look like? Be as specific as possible about exactly what your desired end result is. Your success will be a measure of your clarity - since an achievable goal plan cannot be created around a vague "dream."

If your goal is to get better grades at school, what will that look like when you achieve it? Are you ultimately trying to get into a specific college? Are you looking for a very specific career? Or can your goal be better expressed in terms of the way your life will be if you get those grades? Regardless of what you want, the best way to get it is to first clarify exactly what you want in as much detail as possible. This can be hard work - but without a clear mental picture you'll never have the focus required to achieve your goal.

2. Be willing to make sacrifices. Success takes dedicated preparation and determination. You can liken it to starting a business. In the beginning all you have is an idea that needs to be developed, nurtured, and fleshed out. Once you get past that step and start building your business you may realize you have less time for other things in your life, you may become frustrated along the way when sales aren't as high as you want them to be, and you also may see that this idea is taking up more of your time than you anticipated. That's okay! In order to truly have success with your goals, you must make the necessary sacrifices to get there.

For example, trying to get into a specific college may mean less time for things you like to do, such as going out with friends. Likewise, wanting to become more organized may mean you have to get rid of some of the clutter in your life. All goals come with sacrifices but they are easily surmountable if you have defined exactly what you want and mapped out as we did in the first step. This step can be hard for many people but it is important that you allow yourself the time and willpower to get past it and make the sacrifices needed to achieve your goal.

3. Focus on your goal. In order to achieve your goal you must make it a priority to focus on it every day. I am sure you have heard the phrase, "old habits die hard", and it is said for good reason. Old mental habits are hard to break and without constant and clear mental focus on your goal they can easily overwhelm and take over. If you find yourself about to fall into your old habits, stop and make a clear mental note of what you want, how what you are about to do does not help your goal, make the correct action, and move on. With this daily repetitive action and focus, you will be that much closer to breaking your old habits and making room for the new goals in your life.

As stated in step two, life will try to get in the way of your success, don't let it! By staying focused and recommitting to your goal every day, you will make sure you stay on course. Remember that you are worth it and you are never the backseat driver to your own life!

4. Get passionate. One of the most powerful tools in your "success tool box" is having real passion for your goal. Why passion? Because intense passionate desire for your goal will help you burn in those new neural pathways even faster. Many scientific studies have shown that intense emotion (i.e. passion) is a key success tool. Plus (and this is really a big plus), intense passion will also help you rapidly override any inappropriate old "failure messages" stored in your subconscious mind.

5. Take consistent action. In many ways, actually taking action can be the most difficult step. Successful goal achievement is built by taking one small action after another. So the word of today is action! If you commit to take at least one small action each day, your actions will add up and make a difference. So avoid sitting back waiting for that time when everything will just "magically happen."

You are able to achieve anything you want in your life! All you have to do is follow these steps to create success. You must visualize your goal, face sacrifices, maintain focus, feel passion, and make steps toward it every day. Stop dreaming about what you want to do and do it! You are worth every step you take.
