Why Seek Attorneys For Licensing Issues

By Kris Tanner

Intellectual property breaches have been rampant even before the Internet made it effortless to spread illegal copies of works. People keep sharing and selling ideas, goods, and even secrets unlawfully. The birth of the Internet just made it easier for them to pilfer someone else's works and spread them. Distribution, though, is not all that bad with right licensing contract. It can even aid the author market his composition. But all the legalities involved would make the process complex so it is just sensible to ask someone knowledgeable in that particular subject or hire solicitors.

Say for example you wish people to purchase a music you wrote and recorded. Whether you do it independently or with the help of a recording label, song stealing cases are rampant. Even the most famous artists of today have charged or have been charged of copyright infringement.

Of course, you want it to spread as far as possible so many people would know about it and you also like them to acknowledge you as the composer. You don't want other people to claim your song as theirs. A licensing contract with others would let them play your music lawfully. You and the other parties would indicate the terms and conditions of the arrangement beforehand.

Record companies and artists don't leave it to chance when there's a copyright breach. With millions of dollars at risk, they know they need the top counsels specializing in licensing matters to help them. They could either lose money or destroy their reputation. Worse still, they could lose both.

The whole process is rather very technical to those unfamiliar with the song licensing business. Consumers and even lots of indie musicians usually have little knowledge of copyrights. Because the entire process can become very complex, hiring solicitors can help simplify the matter to the clients. They advise them on what is considered permitted and what is not.

An artist would need a solicitor to act as a guide in licensing matters. If the artist wants to cover a song originally recorded decades ago, he or she would have to obtain a permit to record it. There are specific licenses to apply for if the musician wants to play the tune on a TV show or just use a stanza of the lyrics in a new song. With the all the legalities involved, it would be wise to appoint solicitors to help with the matter.
